Count to 10 with Dinosaurs

This is the first page of my next book “Count to 10 with dinosaurs”. The dinosaur is from my younger son, Siwoo’s childhood doodle book. Children’s drawing always attracts me. It is not perfect but lively.

Children's Picture Book Review | Owl Sees Owl by Laura Godwin

Owl Sees OwlOwl Sees Owl by Laura Godwin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

"Owl Sees Owl" is a beautiful, poetic picture book written by Laura Godwin and illustrated by Rob Dunlavey. The story follows a little owl's journey away from and return back home through the night.

The text is poetically restrained. Each page spread has just four words. Those four words, going along with beautiful glowing illustration, are all enough to represent the atmosphere of silent wonder in the autumn night. Throuout this book, the text and illustration work effectively with each other.

The text and illustrations are composed in mirror like structure-called reverso poem. Beginning with 'Home/ Mama/ Brother/ Sister', the owl leaves his nest and flies off to the tranquil forest. In the middle of the book, he sees his own reflection on the pond(Owl/ Sees/ Owl). As the little awl flies back home, the text and the illustrations repeat in reverse order, closing with 'Sister/ Brother/ Mama/ Home'.

This book should be a perfect choice for bedtime in this autumn season. Luminous illustration of the night scene and repeating text will lead your children to be fast asleep. Children will enjoy following the little owl's exploring and seeing what owl sees. It will make them to be comforting and soothing when the owl returns back home, and at the same time, give some sense of accomplishment from independent adventure too.

It is suitable for children from one year old to early readers and might also be enjoyable to adults those who like poetry and picture book.

Children's Picture Book Review | Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown

Goodnight MoonGoodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

"Goodnight Moon" is a long time beloved children's picture book through generations of readers. In the great green room, a small rabbit says goodnight to the things in his bedroom before going to sleep, one by one.

There is very minial text which repeats and rhymes. It makes redears to feel the mood of the night, instead of having focus on what the text is saying. Rhymes make this book easy to read out and enjoyable to listen to, like as lullaby.

The illustrations are smart. well-designed and intended. It alternate between color and black/white as if reality of the day is overlapped by illusion of the night. You can also see the room darker and darker as the night deepens.

I don't think this book makes your kids to sleep earlier. They would love to keep awake volunteering to spot the things on the pictures, one by one (especially small mouse on the each pages). They may want to say goodnight to all the things in his/her own bedroom after reading this book ( It's definitely time consuming).
However I'm sure this book will give you an adorable time with your child every night. Even if you are a very busy adult living without kids, I still recommend this book. It will be comforting and make your end of the day peaceful.
